Negligent actions can cause birth injuries
Birth injuries can be caused by the negligent actions of medical and/or midwifery personnel. Medical and midwifery staff are required to monitor the foetus during labour, respond to foetal distress, perform a timely caesarean section if required, administer appropriate medications, monitor the mother and the newborn infant, and respond to medical problems that may arise in the mother or newborn. Failure to perform these tasks can result in injuries to both the mother and/or infant.
An injury at birth can mean a long-term disability for the child, infant death or shortened life. There are many birth injuries that result from an obstetrical or midwifery error. Some of the more common ones include:
- Brachial plexus injuries
- Brain injuries
- Cerebral palsy
- Erb’s palsy
- Excessive bleeding
- Fractures
- Infections
- Meconium aspiration
- Paralysis
- Seizures
- Spasticity
- Stillbirth
- Untreated jaundice
